French weight tax 2026: what to know before importing
The malus au poids (France's vehicle weight tax, levied on kerb weight in running order) hits heavy vehicles on top of the CO₂ tax. On an import it can add a lot to the final cost, so it is worth planning for.
How the weight tax works
The tax applies above a kerb weight threshold, in bands of kilograms. Some vehicles qualify for exemptions or reductions (electric cars in particular, and certain hybrids).
As with the malus CO₂ (France's CO₂ emissions tax), an age related allowance applies to imported used vehicles.

The weight tax and the CO₂ tax add together, up to a shared cap. On a large recent SUV the total can run to several thousand euros, so it has to be checked before you buy.
