Quitus fiscal for an imported car: how to get one
The quitus fiscal (the French tax clearance certificate) is the document confirming that the vehicle's VAT position is in order. Without it, you cannot register an imported car in France.
What the quitus fiscal is for
The quitus fiscal (also called a certificat fiscal) proves that VAT has been paid or that none is due. The ANTS (the French national vehicle registration agency) requires it for the carte grise (the French vehicle registration document) application on a vehicle coming from another EU country.

The quitus fiscal (official Cerfa form 1993-PART-D-SD) is requested from the local tax office (SIE), documented on service-public.fr (card F179) and impots.gouv.fr. The procedure is typically done online or by email as soon as the car arrives to avoid any registration delay.
- Purchase invoice for the vehicle
- Foreign registration certificate
- Proof of identity and proof of address
- Where applicable, proof that VAT has been paid
