Vehicle registration for an imported car: the ANTS process
The final stage of an import is French registration: the carte grise (the French vehicle registration document). It is done online on the ANTS (the French national vehicle registration agency) and calls for several documents gathered in advance. The cost depends above all on the regional tax.
The documents to gather
The application is made online only, on the ANTS website. Gather the following beforehand:
- Quitus fiscal (the French tax clearance certificate)
- Certificate of conformity (COC) or equivalent attestation
- Foreign registration certificate
- Valid French contrôle technique (the French roadworthiness test) if the vehicle is over 4 years old
- Proof of identity and proof of address

The price depends above all on the regional tax: the price of one cheval fiscal (fiscal horsepower unit, which varies by region) multiplied by the vehicle's fiscal horsepower, plus fixed duties and, where applicable, the penalty taxes.
The calculator estimates this cost from your region and the vehicle's fiscal horsepower.
